Problem/Need

To design a retrospective book for deceased artist Garry Newton. The book was to showcase his entire body of life's work in a way that allowed the reader access in to his process and inspirations. It needed to be sympathetic to all styles and changes throughout his career but still reflect his personality and style(s).

Strategy/Methodology

A large portion of Garry's work was devoted to printmaking. This method of reproduction was embraced in the selection of paper, type treatments and the hand-numbering / edition markings. Several of his key bodies of work became the impetus for the overall structure and format and the use of analog typewriter "styled" headers with imperfect gradations mirrored many notations he used in his book work.

Results/Impact

The piece was very well received. Overall comments were around the accessibility and appropriateness of the books look and feel. Close family members said it felt very much like an extension of himself and his work. It accomplished what it needed to.
