GDC® Elects New Executive at 2014 Annual General Meeting

Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC) Elects New Executive at Annual General Meeting and Strategic Planning Sessions in Ottawa June 5-7 2014.

Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC) held their Annual General Meeting and Strategic Planning Day from 5-7 June to review the previous year’s accomplishments, elect the new National Executive Committee, and lay the foundations of the organization’s 2014-2016 Strategic Plan.

“2013 was a hugely transformative year for GDC, filled with the completion of major initiatives that form the foundation for a revitalized and refocused organization. Looking back on the vision outlined at the 2012 AGM in Moncton, the initiatives we set out to achieve in just two short years were accomplished - something made possible only with the help of dedicated volunteers, members and partners across the country.”

Highlights from 2013 included:

  • The launch of a new identity for GDC, developed by Dennis Boyle, CGD, and John Ngan, CGD
  • The relaunch of, designed to scale with GDC as it grows
  • A development of a guide for internship best practices and their presentation to the Ontario Minister of Labour
  • The election of Melanie MacDonald, GDC Executive Director, to the Icograda Audit Committee
  • Recognition of Professors Peter Bartl FGDC, Jorge Frascara FGDC and Walter Jungkind FGDC with a group Icograda Achievement Award, along with Robert L. Peters FGDC with an individual Icograda Achievement Award
  • The presentation of $7000 in scholarships to five students selected from 129 submissions from across the country
  • The development of a national mentorship program
  • Growing the GDC Foundation fund to $39,119

In 2014, GDC will:

  • Grow CGD™ certification as the recognized Canadian standard for the creative and business communities
  • Highlight excellence in graphic and communication design through the Graphex Awards (announced 9 May in Edmonton, Alberta)
  • Develop new opportunities and resources for educators, including a 2-day education track at Pica 2014
  • Continue outreach to engage the creative and business communities in support of best practices to grow the value of the Canadian design profession

  • Treasurer: Ana Herrera, CGD, Edmonton (Alberta North)

2014-2016 National Committee chairs include:

  • National Certification Board Chair: Michael Cober, CGD, Vancouver (BC)
  • National Partnership Chair: Andy Maier, CGD, Vancouver (BC)
  • National Sustainability Chair: Valerie Elliott, CGD, Victoria (Arctic)
  • GDC Foundation Chair: Peggy Cady, CGD, FGDC, Victoria (Vancouver Island)

Retiring members of the National Executive include Matt Warburton, CGD, FGDC, VP Communications (BC); Jim Hudson, CGD, Past President (Atlantic); Stephen Bau, CGD, VP Web (BC); and Karin Jager, CGD, VP Education (BC).

At the close of the meeting, the National Council selected Calgary as the host of the 2015 GDC Annual General Meeting and Whitehorse as the host of the 60th anniversary meeting in 2016.
