Mark Busse is the President of the BC Chapter of GDC and a Partner and Design Director at Industrial Brand Creative—a creative firm that offers innovative branding, marketing strategies, advertising campaigns, print and new media productions that go beyond the basics of good design, and provide results.
Busse was educated in fine arts, business management and design at the University of British Columbia and Trinity Western University, providing him with the necessary tools for graphic design and shaped his lifelong passion for communication and problem-solving.
In 1997 Busse co-founded the Canadian design firm Industrial Brand Creative with Ben Garfinkel in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. IBC has been successfully leading clients both large and small to their business objectives through brand communications and creative solutions. From 1992 - 2000 Busse was a senior member of the production management team at Hemlock Printers, one of the largest printers in North America.
As IBC’s Design Director, Busse leads a team that provides innovative branding, marketing strategies, advertising campaigns, print and new media productions that go beyond the basics of good design, and provide results. His clients have included Molson Breweries, Telus, UBC, Future Shop, Ledalite, Granville Island Brewery, Fraser Valley Regional Library, Best Buy, Nokia, Toyota, TWU, Hemlock Printers, CMHC and Henriquez Architects among many others.
Busse's branding, print and interactive design work has been recognized by How Magazine, Applied Arts, Lotus Awards, Graphics Exchange, Potlatch, Portfolios.com and International Gallery of Superb Printing – as well as being featured in the permanent collection at his mom’s house.
In 2004, Busse was elected to the board of the BC Chapter of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada, and currently serves as President. He is also Co-Chair of the 2008 Graphex Canadian National Design Awards, sits of the GDC National Web Committee and is an active member of ACM SIGGRAPH Vancouver, serving as a contributing editor for their magazine.
Since assuming the GDC's chief executive role, Busse has been instrumental in forming a new executive committee, increasing the chapter's membership by over 25% and rejuvenating the design community in BC through a series of popular events including the Salazar Student Awards, Shared Dreams Cuban Design exhibit, Graphex national design competition, screening of the 2007 documentary Helvetica, as well as numerous professional development events.
Among his accomplishments as President, Busse helped empower the chapter with online interactive tools and resources, stabilizing the non-profit association's financial position by brokering new sponsorship relationships, and leading the charge against 'speculative' design competitions, closely liaising with the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics planning committee to establish new ethical design guidelines. He also brokered a new partnership with Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design that led to new permanent offices for GDC/BC—a first in the association's 50 years.
In 2007, Busse caused some controversy with his article I Am Not a Graphic Designer, challenging his very own industry to re-examine the professional title Graphic Designer, suggesting it was time to adopt a new, broader term Communication Design. After presenting his case to the GDC National AGM in Montreal, a national sub-committee was formed to investigate the issue further.
In 2003 Busse co-developed the Communication Design curriculum for the Foundation Art & Design program at Vancouver Film School in Vancouver where he continues to teach and has mentor young design students. Busse also finds time to sit on the TWU Business mentorship committee, serving as a mentor to senior Business School students.
In 2006 Busse was invited to be on the advisory board of Common Ground - an international initiative merging new media, art and philanthropy to focus attention on—and raise money for—environmental projects worldwide.
A design writer on topics surrounding design and branding, Mark Busse's opinions have been featured in the Design Edge Magazine, Graphic Exchange Magazine, PSFK and Design Taxi. Busse been invited to speak and sit on panel discussions at various design and graphic arts conferences, serve as a design judge and external examiner, and was recently featured in the documentary "Branding and the Human Billboard" by filmmaker Sofie Rousmaniere.
Busse was recently honoured with a special invitation by the President of Prografica to submit a poster design to be included in an exhibit at Icograda's World Design Congress "Design/Culture 2007" in Havana, Cuba in October, 2007.
He also regularly donates his time to lead a team each year in Canstruction, an international design/build competition benefiting local food banks as well as volunteering design and other services for The Compassion Project, Room To Read, Shalom BC and various other charities.
Busse is a passionate cook and food lover and lives with his wife Andrea and blind dog Charlie in the Commercial Drive area of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
